Oh, my goodness! Isn't this adorable??? It can be found at
This Succulent Gift Shop. I am thinking about how to try and make one myself! I need to study how I could make the roof to hold the plants, and allow drainage. Sometimes I look at these things and just figure it might be better just to buy it already made...even though I am a DIY person. I just love this. Has anyone ever made anything with a sedum or succulent roof before?? I sort of have an urge to just go around turning everyones roofs into succulent roofs! LOL...can you only imagine! The cost!!! I'd have to be a fairy godmother with a magic wand to pull this one off!
when you figure it out!.....I want one too...will you tell me how? what if you made the roof like a tray and drilled holes in it...that way it would hold and drain? I love this.
ReplyDeletethanks for the idea...I thinkof you every time I walk past the succulents in the garden center of my local stores
Even birds can have green roofs! I saw a dog house with a green roof awhile back, so it makes sense that birds should have an eco-friendly (not to mention totally adorable!) place to call home too. I saw them at Apartment Therapy if you're interested in checking the dog house version out. They used succulents as well.
ReplyDeleteGreen roofs for the fauna... interesting... I'm willing to bet that theres some sort of wire 'cage' or something holding in the soil... much like a topiary. The moss is shoved inside it and the plants planted through it. Maybe you could rig up something with hardware cloth? Not sure drainage would be an issue, here in Texas that would dry out in an hour.
ReplyDeleteFern- what a neat thing! I noted your comment there also...and i have a kitty cat! i was thinking i could build that house on my screenroom for him, as you suggested with catnip growing on top! He could spend most of his time laying on top!!! LOL-- but quite happily!!!
ReplyDeleteClaude- you are right--it is such a shallow top, it may not need much drainage...i was thinking...instead of wood for the top, i coiuld use a shallow 8 x 8 metal baking pan, and drill just a couple of holes in bottom. It would be too humid here I believe without some drain holes....I would also worry about rot here...so would use treated wood for the body of the house also.
Oh I DO like that. I have plenty of baby succulents and I got some spanish moss when we were in SC. hmmmmm... Can't spare a birdy house right now though. :) They're occupied.
ReplyDeleteI love this bird house. It should be easy to construct, but getting the plants to take hold without sliding off would be my problem. Maybe a little glue? Do you thinking that just misting it occasionally would suffice?
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
ReplyDeleteOh and love the bird house!!
Lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree. What is wrong with Americans?!?!?!
