My cousin sent me this picture of an aeonium I gave her last Christmas. She has had it in her screenroom and it has grown tall and thin! I think it may have been looking for more light! What do you think? It also started growing roots out the sides of the stalk, so it probably needed more water than what I had told her to give it...once a month! OK...yeah...my fault really...but now she is going to cut it off down low and try possibly rooting the peice she cuts off. Maybe with more water and light it will stay more compact. It was a fun experiment so far!!! Thanks for sending the pic to me, cousin!!!
Now these next two pics are a plant I have been eyeing for a year! I finally had my camera to take a pic today at work! The gal who owned it just casually said "Oh...I wish you would take that plant"! "I'm gonna kill it...and if you don't take it, I'm gonna get rid of it...so please take it home with you"!!! Well, I tried to argue with her and get her to keep it, but she insisted! I could not believe my good luck! This kalenchoe (? variety) has large leaves, and then is also surrounded by all the little frilly leaves! It had bloomed about 1 month ago, and I think the flowers were white. It was the sweetest thing imaginable!
I ended up giving the plant to a friend today, but I got about 4 cuttings off of it first! As soon as I got out of my car, I potted them up. So now it is just wait and see!
This last plant was a new one that same gal had! I was sort of hoping she would tell me to take this one as well...but alas, she did NOT! RATS!!! LOL. I think this may be a Hoya becasue the leaves are so waxy and thick! Each leaf on this baby was about 4 inches long and 3 inches wide!!!!! Lovely variegation too! I think I need one of these to be complete!!! If anyone knows if this is actually a Hoya, will you let me know??? Thanks!
Thank you. yes I will not start over anymore
ReplyDeleteThat aeonium definitely needs more light... anytime you increase the light, you should also increase the water, as a general rule. Don't know a darned thing about kolanchoe...
ReplyDeletebut that plant on the bottom is not a hoya, it's another tropical succulent, pepermomia, not sure of the exact species. They're good growing plants which handle lower light than most succulents.
Quick search tells me that the peperomia is probably one of the P. obtusifolia cultivars.
ReplyDeleteThe first plant isn't an Aeonium at all; it's an Echeveria. It is either Echeveria 'Black Knight' or Echeveria 'Black Prince.' In either case, that poor specimen is absolutely starving for more light.
ReplyDeleteI think the Kalachoe could use more light as well. Even though it flowered, the new leaves shouldn't be that small.
The last plant is Peperomia obtusifolia variegata, and it either needs to be allowed to trail or again, given more light,so the stem can grow stouter. A plant that small shouldn't need a stake!
Interesting plants. I'm glad someone said what they were because I thought they were something else :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a plant savior!
Anonymous- I could have sworn I gave her an aeonium...but it has been a year!!! As far as the kalenchoe goes...I have been searching for how to make one repeat this fascinating growth...I love the long stems with small leaves...and I think it is all due to low light. The Peperomia (thanks Claude) and Kalenchoe have been kept in an office setting under artificial light! I love how the Kalanchoe looks!!! I want to repeat this growth pattern on another plant! It is so sweet!!!
ReplyDeletehey girl...you are going strong! sorry for the silence...I have been reading...just not talking much. I will be posting a photo of the cacti that I started from seeds about two years ago....I am a very proud mommy!
ReplyDeleteThat last plant was a popular houseplant in the Caribbean when I was a child, haven't seen it in years.
ReplyDeleteTootsie- I am glad you are taking a break...seems you might need one with all that hard work you do!!! Thanks for coming by!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole!
Claude...thanks for the info re: Peperomia...will be looking for some of this...it is really neat!!! Love the low light and waxy leaves aspect of it!
love the way the roots are coming out the sides, and i adore variegated leaves...have quite a few plants like that...don't ask me their names!
ReplyDeleteOoh Pretty. Succulents are very nice.
