Hi everyone! One reader of my blog, Rick, asked a question. I don't know the answer. I was wondering if any of you know if there is a taste difference between young and more mature Prickly Pear cactus pads? I would also like to know if anyone had experimented with different varieties of Prickly Pear and if there are any taste differences between them. Thanks in advance, if you know and can share with us!

ReplyDeleteThe more mature a pad is, the tougher it would be... I don't think the taste is affected though. As for different varieties, the other varieties available to me are far too thorny to mess with, so I haven't tried.
ReplyDeleteThe cactus fruit looks very christmasy with the red and green together. I don't know anything about the cooking or tasting of these very common cactus. This makes for intersting reading to me.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a thorny question to me. I've never tried prickly pear, but it would seem to me that the younger ones would be more tender at least.
ReplyDeleteActually, there is a difference. You can buy them in a market and they are usually grown in Mexico but I can't remember their right name. Guess that didn't help much.

I've read that the older ones are more bitter. Since they don't tell the age of the pads on the store labels (like young and tender, or old and tough) it's hard to know what to look for. Usually, the taste is mostly disguised in whatever dish the napoles are in, so I don't think it makes a lot of difference.
