In memory of a magestic tree!

You know this is sick when I am mouring a tree...but I find myself doing it more and more when I see senseless destruction! This morning, I did a few ATC sized prickly pear things...but they did not meet the cut in my eyes...so I tried a larger paper and started drawing and then used Sharpie pens to draw it out and fill in. It is very basic, but conveys my feelings.

Wanted to show you my one pad that I planted in the front garden between all my kalenchoes! It was all curled up, but was the most perfect green one I could find in what was left along side of the road after it was cut down and taken away. See it in the middle there!

Claude from "Random Rants and Prickly Plants" said the tree could regrow if the root was left in place! Better than that, it has 4 ft of trunk still in place! I wonder if it will grow again??? Now I am excited to see! Thanks, Claude! Here is a close up of my pad.

    Four foot of trunk? It's definitely coming back. Unless the crew that cut it down was really really intent on killing it and put something like salt in the roots... Your pad looks fine, you should have roots and new growth within a month or two. If it grows like mine, you'll have a lot of growth the first two years, then it'll start slowing down.

    Julie why did they cut it down? I feel sad when I see any tree destroyed. I hope that the pad grows for you. Now that would ease the senselessness a little. You are such a talented artist and it has been amazing to watch your progress.

    That is so sad- but it will grow back from the trunk and your pad should grow just fine. I've had pads fall off and root where they landed. I love your drawing- truly wonderful!

    That tree must have been beautiful, your ATC certainly is. What a shock it must have been to see the tree cut down. Your post is a touching tribute to an amazing prickly pear.

    Even I loved thr Quote, Julie. Thats the first thing I noticed; and thts so True! Your sketch is fine! And I do pray that it grows and brings smile on your face (n heart!)

    I cried when my trees had to be cut down, when they became a threat to the foundation of our house. I even took planks from it and kept it in my room in its memery. I even wrote a short story to alleviate the pain:(

    I have a friend who owns a landscaping and garden design business and she hates cactus and succulents. I tell her she's a snob!

    Lately, a similar pricly pear at my student's house had been chooped down due to massive renovation....

    Thank goodness you found the root when you did. Thats just awful. Why would they do something like that...surely someone would have wanted it. Oh dear.
