BTW... I was out looking for some mulch (I have never really ever used store bought mulch before,as I have used leaves, pine straw, and grass clippings in all of my prior life)...and of course, being as cheap as I am, I asked a lady who was also there in the mulch area what I should get, and of course I was really wanting something
cheap. She said, "Well, I heard that eucalyptus mulch is really nice smelling, and helps to keep insects away from your yard, but it is more expensive". When we checked it out, it turned out to be the least expensive. I bought two bags and man does my front yard smell good!
Hi Julie, Thanx for visiting my blog. THe eucalyptus mulch sounds like such a FANTASTIC find!
ReplyDeleteMaking Mulch seems to be the only good use you can put Eucalyptus leaves to. I have three full grown eucalyptus tress in my garden and they are an equally huge nuisance. The Kites, who relish perching on these trees, soil the driveway with their droppings rather vengefully.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of Eucalyptus mulch.
ReplyDeleteNeat! I do not think I have seen eucalyptus mulch and I bet it does smell good. : ) Need to do some looking around my garden center.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for some mulch for my roses, and so far I have not found anything I want. (Last year I used a bark mulch that was ugly and messy)so this eucalyptus mulch sounds great. I'll have to look for some. Haven't seen it here yet!

Huh. I was told that eucalyptus leaves are alleopathic (is that the word?)
ReplyDeleteI thought that when the leaves degrade they let out a chemical that inhibits other plant's growth, and was told not to include them in my compost.
You'll have to do a one-year follow up and let us know how the beds did with this mulch! (maybe the wood isn't the same as the leaves?)
Jenn...there doesn't seem to be much info out there in regards to vegetable gardening with use of the eucalyptus mulch. Most sources comment on the toxicity of the eucalyptus LEAF, rather than the wood/bark. It breaks down very slowly over years, so I will finish out my pepper plants and the use the mulch for flowers from then on out! I did buy one more bag of it...gotta see where it can be applied now. Thanks for your comment. We will have to watch as time goes on to see what results with use of this awesomely awesome smelling mulch!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHave never heard of eucalyptus mulch. This is one of those moments I wish we had scratch 'n sniff garden blogs.
ReplyDeleteI have been doing some research on eucalyptus mulch and I read this site before I came here:

Thought it would be useful for the vegetable garden thing. The user actually posted a several week experiment including pictures
Great post! I am doing some landscaping in my yard and was considering purchasing some mulch. I have never tried it before, but I hear good things! I think I'll buy some now.
