New gardening books!

My SIL finds these really amazing and awesome books for me all of the time! How does she do it??? I really don't know, but it is such a blessing to be the recipient of these things!!! I really appreciate her sweetness!!! Thanks Lynn!

I've been reading all about worm boxes (for indoor use)...kinda yucky! Also on plant diseases and pests, and a whole lotsa other things in regard to organic farming.

Did I tell you I have my first little purple eggplant on one of the plants? It is about 2.5 inches long! So cute. I keep praying no terrible thing happens to my plants. It is nerve wracking!!! Seriously. The Bush Tomatoes in their orange pots are looking great...really growing and the leaves and plants in general look sturdy and dark green. Phew!

Do any of you have indoor worm boxes?? It sounds kinda gross, but maybe I could handle it. Maybe.

  1. I had one once and found it to be more trouble than it was worth. A compost pile outside is the best for me.

  2. Tried it too..
I didn't think it was big enough to really produce enough--and I didn't want it bigger. ;)

My in-laws tried growing worms in the basement once as a small business. Very interesting. They had square buckets with ventilation holes at the top and a sort of tumbler thing that cleaned the bins out now and then. They didn't do it long, guess it wasn't enough of a money maker for them.

I may try it again--but probably outside. ;)

  3. I was just going through my books, trying to decide which ones to take to Tally and which ones to leave here at the house. Most of the gardening books, of course, found their way into the boxes, even though the garden is here! I've never tried a worm bin in the house. Wouldn't it stink or at least attract fruit flies?

  4. Hi Julie!

Thanks so much for finding my blog and leaving me my first comment :) I had an indoor worm bin and it wasn't bad at all (pretty convenient, actually)--but I'm not generally creeped out by worms or creepy crawlies. I kept them in the top of the closet, where it was cool and dark. However, the moisture in the box got waaaaay out of wack and I ended up committing wormicide. I felt so awful that that was the end of my worm adventures.

  5. I seem to remember DH having one outside but more for fishing than gardening. I can't even stand a well-wrapped worm box in the refrig.

    Great looking books.

  6. I have plenty of worms throughout my gardens no need for a box inside or out. Great books. Veggie gardening is hard on the nerves for sure.

  7. I agree with Lisa, We had one but we also found it more work then what we got in return and we have two compost bins and we love them. A tomato plant is growing out of one of them. : ) But, maybe you will have better luck. Good to hear about your eggplant and tomatoes hope you have many.
    Blessings,
    Bobbie Lynn

    P.S. Love the cake.

  8. Nope---no worms or worm boxes here... Sorry!!!! My oldest son used to collect all kinds of bugs when he was little. Drove me crazy --since I am NOT a bug person AT ALL....

Great new books. Your SIL is a "keeper"....
    Hugs,
    Betsy
