Mid-century chair?

My Mom and I were leaving the neighborhood one day, and a man was putting this chair out by the road. He was moving, and couldn't take it with him.
He told us we could take it, and also gave us the matching foot stool.
My Mom, the upholsterer, made it new cushion covers! She picked a beautiful floral patterned fabric. As you can see, you can change it's degree of recline in the back by moving a long peice of wood to different positions.
I have always felt it was probably crafted in the 50's. Maybe 60's. Does anyone have a good guess, or idea? It is just the best little chair (it sits close to the ground). Don't you just love these WIDE arms??? They come in handy while watching TV while eating! Donovan loves it cause he can have his mac n cheese while watching Spongebob Squarepants!!!

We have had the pleasure of loving it for the past 6 years or so!

  1. I have never seen a chair like that. It almost looks home made. Did you ever look on the bottom to see if there was any identifying label or something? (Ever watch Antiques Roadshow? I love that show.)

Oh, and thanks for giving me a craving for mac n cheese :P

  5. I'd guess about 60's... it's got some Danish Mod influence. Kinda. Never seen one like that, but it's a good piece.

  6. Whatever it is, it looks comfy!

My brother has a chair that you recline like yours and he calls it a Planter's chair. He's says it's modeled after chairs from old Plantations in the south that the Planter's sat in in their offices. Doubt if that will help any but you never know!

  11. Mid-Century...Yes, it looks like it is maple!

Lynn- I couldn't believe my eyes when I researched a Morris chair...how interesting and fun. It certainly looks like a match, or so close to it anyway...crafted during the arts and crafts movement. I have fallen more in love with my chair after reading and seeing all about it! Thankyou for the info!!!!!

Cindy- I still need to turn it upside down to see what I find. Maybe by late tomorrow I will have time...or maybe I will ignore everyone here and do it anytime I wish!!! Hee hee hee!!!
