Grasshopper find. A real live one in south Florida!
Found at Fairchild Gardens in Miami this past Saturday. I've been looking for one (and a praying mantis too). This guy looked like a mighty warrior with his tough exterior. I loved his color!
Julie, if I'd have known you had a massive desire for grasshoppers I could have sent you a couple dozen. Actually, I could have sent you a bushel basket full. But this one is nice, I'll give you that. There's a species here that a green stripe down its back which I've always found handsome for a grasshopper... I'll see if I can get a pic of one for you
hey, you're not gonna believe this, but I was going out to take a pic for my post, and right there on the table with all my cuttings was the grasshopper in question. LOL. He was like a little fashion model, waiting for his cover shot... anyway, go to my post on Consolea, and there's actually a really great shot of him. Enjoy.
Lisa...they are scarce in south east Florida. At least in the cities. Probably could find them in the middle of the state (Everglades). I cannot find one walking stick or mantis anywhere around where I live.
It's a lubber. They will lay a cartload of eggs (the larger ones are the females) and that results in a bounty of hungry, little lubbers. Do you have lillies....oooh they luv lillies!! Yum, yum.
They are everywhere.

Yes, we have lots of them also. Great pix.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lubber. They lay a cartful of eggs which turn into baby lubbers who are voracious eaters, do you have lillies in your garden?
