I was inspired my my blogger pal, Carolie, when she got her Halloween decorations started. Her wreath made me think I should do something with mine! The wreath below I have had for about 7 years now and I just wrapped a long strand of green leaves with different kinds of white flowers all around it, and it has looked beautiful all these years.
Her wreath made me think I could revise mine a bit for the season, and today while I was out at a garage sale, I found a whole bag of those pic decorations (all autumn themed), for just 1 dollar. I used 3 sprigs with pumpkins, 1 sprig of fall leaves, 2 sprigs of acorns and nuts, and one little scarecrow...and look at it now!!! Sorry again for the lighting, but my lamp in here has a golden glow...but you look closely you can see the original wreath showing through from 12 - 3 o'clock, where you see the white flowers.
After that I came home to spray 4 patio chairs with orange Krylon paint (the stuff you can use on plastic)...as I decided to make chairs for my dining room table out of plastic chairs! I know it sounds crazy...but my chairs (and I have had chairs of ALL types) get torn up by all the kids, and now grands coming up! So, anyway, I sprayed 4 chairs pumpkin orange (inspired by some orange chairs I saw at Ikea), and when I went in the backyard, I found these really cool fungus growing on my obviously rotting picnic table!!! I know I haven't taken care of it the way I should, but evenually, if these things don't just fall off, I will scrape them off and re-sand the table so we can actually use it during the cool months of the year! I sure love the look of them...so pretty. My mom thought I was a nut case for sure when I ran in to get my camera. LOLOL.
Now...I ask you...how many times have you met such a brave blogger to actually post pics of a rotting table they own????? :)
aww i'm glad my post inspired you to make a really cool wreath! i love the pumpkins! we have those fungus things by our sunflowers, where the wood border of the bed is. they're pretty cool looking haha! i wanna see the orange chairs!
ReplyDeleteCarolie- You WILL see the chairs...hee hee hee...can you believe I am doing this? I wanted to buy those orange chairs at Ikea, but by the time we got out to where we would buy them, the lines were so long and we were exhausted. I am trying to decide if I should put any cushions in them, OR turn them into Gator (Univ. of Florida) chairs. I am actually thinking of painting a little criss cross portion of the chair royal blue for perfect Gator colors! Well...it is football season and all.....
ReplyDeleteAs cool as those fungi are to look at, they are feeding on your table. The wood will become (or may already be) spongy and crumbly inside as it continues to break down. There may be other forces at work in there as well: bacteria, bugs, etc.
ReplyDeletehaha how colorful i can't wait to see!
ReplyDeleteI think it beautiful too - now about those orange chairs...
ReplyDeleteNow, you need to draw that interesting fungus lol
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty wreath.
Julie,
ReplyDeleteI, too, want to see the orange chairs! I bought some Universal spray paint to redo my metal patio set, which is currently black. All it came in was black. I was disappointed as I wanted some wild color like fuchsia!
The fungi is interesting to look at. We don't have such a thing on wood here--too darn dry!
Aiyana
Teri- Good point...see...I still don't think of drawing things out! I must do this! :)
ReplyDeleteAiyana- go back to paint store...I think the Krylon can be used on metal too and it comes in all kinds of wild colors! I am planning to paint all my outdoor chairs different colors...like you see the colored adirondack chairs done. We like the light plastic chairs because we can pick them up and move around the fire pit when we want to...we have about 12, for these times!
The wreath is beautiful! I change my wreath with the seasons and it has become expensive since my house has double doors! Convenient for moving furniture in and out though, LOL.
ReplyDeleteIn Alaska they call that fungus "bear bread" and some people remove the big ones from trees and then paint scenes on the light part that was connected to the three. I am sure you can google it and see examples
Vickie
you're just the right blogger, is all i can say, and hooray for rotting tables, specially when they are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteVickie- I will check that out right now! Thanks for info!
ReplyDeleteSoul B- Thanks girl!!!
You could break off this fungus and add it to your wreath. THat would be free and give it a very earthy natural look.
ReplyDeleteJulie, you and your picnic table have provided beautiful fungus among us. Several of them look like agates. I agree with Lisa, but only if the wreath is left outside. Bringing the fungus inside might compromise your indoor air quality.
ReplyDeleteJulie... you said something about those fungus falling off... they won't. They'll survive for years. The light and dark colored rings are actually growth rings, like in trees, and whenever they decide to put out more spores, they just grow a new ring. If you remove them, and dry them in a very low temperature oven for an hour or so, any remaining spores will be destoyed. Seal them with a quick coat of glossy or matte clear spray paint, and they can last almost indefinitely in any dried floral arrangment.
ReplyDeleteHow thoughtful of nature to decorate the outdoor table for you. It would seem a shame to remove the fungi but I guess that depends on how much you actually use the table? Great pics!
