Cholla blooms!

I was really inspired by the weath of Cholla blooms posted lately, and I decided to do a quick sketch (5 minutes) using this technique I had learned at our art gallery, during a college class. I'm sure it has some sort of name, but all it is is drawing without taking your pen off the paper! I was enthralled with this then, and I still enjoy it...and I am thinking I may do more of it, because it has such a free feeling to it, and I am seriously going to buy a set of COPIC pens after I return to work! This was done with a black Sharpie, a yellow highlighter (cause I did not have any COPIC PENS yet), LOL...and green Sharpie and red/brown colored pencil.I do have watercolor pencils, but I am no good at using them. Sooo...I hope everyone has a wonderful Cactus Monday today! I am off to Walmart now for a little birthday shopping for my Mom! Bye for now!!!
xoxo- Julie

  4. Great little drawing there Julie. Good shading too. I'm still learning how to use markers. I have not touch in that department. Love the pen and marker colorings that people are doing but I just do not have luck, need more practice. Happy shopping and Happy Birthday to your Mom. Happy Cactus Monday to you too.

  5. Seriously, this is so lovely. It must be just the perfect combination of inspiration, technique and a little magic. Isn't that what art is all about?

  9. WOW, that is fantastic for not taking your sharpie off the page! Not to mention, it is executed very well using mostly office supply materials. A highlighter? It worked well! I'm really impressed!!! And you chose my most favorite as of late, my good friend Cholla. :)

  11. Forgive my ignorance, but what are Coptic pens? Are they from Egypt? You do have artistic talent, Julie, more in your little finger than I could dream of having.

  15. Very nice--especially just using a Sharpie! I've also thought of buying a set of Copic markers, but don't know if I would like them and they are too expensive to take a chance on. I wish I could try them first.

  17. As much talent as you have when it comes to drawing and sketching---you need to get the supplies you need and 'go for it'.....

Great picture. Like I said, you are very gifted.

  18. Thanks so much...everyone...for your sweet comments on my little sketch here! It blew me away that you all thought it was GOOD! I keep looking at it, and it is appealing to me...I can't wait to get the Coptic pens...which, BTW, Walk2write,...are watercolor pens that can layer the color on for various shading...very cool pens! Amazing actually!

  21. I think it's called a contour line drawing when you don't take your pen off the page.

When I learned about it in art class, we were also not supposed to look at what the drawing, just the the model, or whatever's being drawn. I really enjoyed some of the results I got from that. Taught me to pay close attention to details, and really see what I'm looking at.

  22. I really love this. Reminds me of a hand painted pot made in italy I have had for years that I stole from mum. Do more. Get those pens... But those sharpies are doing the trick!!!??
