Looky what I got!

Well, I am just borrowing this from my Mom. I was surprised when I told her I had read about a blogger who was drying apples for snacks, and she said, "Oh...would you like to borrow my dehydrator"? Well, yeah, I think I would! I liked the idea of drying apples since they are much in lower sugar content, and I am always looking for something to snack on late at night or while at work.

I washed up all the trays, and got everyting ready to go...

Stacked it all up to make sure I had it all right...

I washed, cored and cut up a bag of Granny Smiths. I decided to leave the skins, and I squeezed lime juice all over the cut edges, to keep them from changing color so badly.

Every tray is loaded in a single layer, and this top tray is kinda scant as I ran out of apples by then. OK, I am putting on the lid now. The machine is very quiet. Thank goodness. I am leaving it on the kitchen counter till tomorrow evening around 8:30pm...yes, my book says to dry the apples for 23 hours! I will be keeping an eye on them anyway. I cut them thinner than 1/4 inch anyway, so it may not take quite as long. I can hardly wait to see how they turn out, and if they will make a healthy snack that tastes good. We shall see. Stay tuned to see the results tomorrow! I am thinking strawberries would be really good too, and also low sugar. Can you think of anything that would be good dried, for a low sugar snack???

  1. Bananas! My Mom used to dry citrus fruit to use as decorations.

  2. I've always wanted to try one of these. I found a recipe for Kale chips that is supposed to be really good for you. The raw food community has lots of recipes for dried snacks out there. Have fun!

  3. Great idea Julie. Tell us how they taste please. Are they hard? Inquiring minds need to know.

  4. We have one of those thingies too! I surprisingly liked dried orange slices. They get really flavorful but aren't juicy. I liked to bite them off the peel which turns into a rind of sorts. I also liked bananas but they aren't like the ones you see in "chip" form. We had to dry our stuff forever. I think it was longer than 24 hours! Its worth it though, and tasty too!

  5. I borrowed one of these before and made some kind of fruit leather. It was a little tedious, which is probably why I didn't buy one of the gadgets. But maybe it's because there weren't enough trays. If I had been able to make twice or three times as much at one time, I probably wouldn't have minded. Does that make any sense? I guess it does because whenever I bake pies I like to make at least two at a time, and I always make double or triple batches of cookies. Anyway, your apples will probably be delicious.

  7. Hi Julie

Well isn't that neat!!?? I can't wait until 8:31 to see how they turned out...*g*.
I bet they will be really delicious I love dried fruit.
You could do plums and peaches...and you could do tomatoes for sundried tomatoes.
My brother who takes people on hiking trips in the mountains of British Columbia would dehydrate the food and thats what they would eat. Its too heavy to carry tooo much food.

    How neat!
hope you are having a great day Julie...almost the weekend..yay..

  8. I will be curious to see your results. Maybe bananas would be good. I like to gnaw on dried bananas. I don't know about the sugar content.

  9. I worked in an italian deli for a little while. We had 6 industrial sized dehydrators linned up alog the bench. We "semi-dried" tomatoes all day and night. When they were done, we covered them in olive oil, herbs and s&p.
