Continuing northward through Georgia

We had two goals for today...one was to travel to Perry, Georgia to visit the New Perry Hotel, and eat in their restaurant and just generally check the place out! My Mom has the cookbook printed in 1996, and has always wanted to check it out. It was a beautiful old hotel, and the food was southern all lthe way, and very delicious!

Here was the menu, held my my gorgeous daughter!!

This was a lovely Hoya plant in the lobby, lovingly cared for by the housekeeper, who has been there over 30 years! It is so variegated...I wanted to steal it! LOL

And check it out...lo and behold...more Wandering Jew, surrounding this beautiful garden plaque. They had nice outdoor gardens all around the hotel.

A search for succulents!

I will be on the hunt for a few succulents to post about on my vacation. Here in Tifton, Georgia this morning, I found only these really pretty, yet invasive little gems outside our hotel! I happen to L-O-V-E them not only for their gorgeous deep purple color, and their sweetest-of-sweet blooms, but also for their compact, small selves. What great impact they can make in large patches all clumped together! The ones here are sparce, but I took a few close-ups of the flowers out in the morning dew, just because they are so adorable!

Tradescantia pallida

Though sometimes accounted a weed, spiderwort is cultivated for borders and also used in containers. Where it appears as a volunteer, it is often welcomed and allowed to stay.

Interesting facts I found on Wikipedia:

The genus takes its name from John Tradescant the elder, an 17th century English plant collector and nurseryman.

The cells of the stamen hairs of some Tradescantia are colored blue, but when exposed to sources of ionizing radiation such as gamma rays, the cells mutate and change color to pink; they are one of the few tissues known to serve as an effective bioassay for ambient radiation levels.

That is interesting! I did not know that!

"Thank God", the succulents cried...

OK, this is a sad story! I was out at my tires the other day and found 3 of these plants (everything except the purple one, Wandering Jew)laying in between some of the tires, on the ground. I had forgotten that a few months (I'll bet ya) ago, I had pulled them out because they were getting fried in the sun. They would be put in a pot and taken in the screenroom, but....it never happened...so all this time they were just laying there...in the shade. Then, when I discovered them, they laid around another two weeks waiting to get planted...THIS is the reason I love succulents...they tolerate so much abuse from me...but they LOVE me too!!! LOL
Anyway, I planted them in this clay pot today and added a peice of my neighbors Wandering Jew, and they look pretty darn happy, don't you think?


Sempervivum arachnoideum cv. 'Cebenese, or "Cobweb"

Could you have resisted this absolutely neato-groovy-cool plant??? There he was sitting amongst all the others...obviously a king among paupers. Although he felt happy, he cried out to be taken home with me, and made to be the king he really was! I repotted him, and put lovely stones all around him, and he is now the new King of Screenporch Succulentom, surrounded by his new "subjects". He is happy, and I am ectastic!!! This is a crazy love I have for all my babies!!! What is wrong with me...I must be going nutty in my old age!
